Are there other ways to get this online resource?
On occasion, certain search results might lead you to an error message. Sometimes, we have alternative access options for online resources that you can try.
When the library is addressing an outage or access issue, we will inform you by writing a message below our search bar on the library homepage.
Answer
Below are some alternative access points that you can try when you stumble across an affected resource. These steps are intended for journals, newspapers, magazines, and other periodical titles. They will not work for specialized databases like Statista or IBISWorld.
1. LibrarySearch - More Options
Beside the "Full Text Online" button, there will be a "More Options" drop-down menu. Alternative access points will be listed here if they exist, such as full text being available in ProQuest in the example below.
2. Google Scholar and Open Indexes
Try searching for the title of the article in Google Scholar or an open academic search index. The authors may have uploaded a manuscript copy somewhere that Google or another service has indexed, or an open access option might exist. If you are searching Google Scholar via our access point, avoid selecting "Get it from Library@VIU" links, as you will likely encounter the error or outage again.
3. Search the A-Z Journals List
Above the search bar on the library homepage, select "Journals" and search for the journal title (this is different from the article title). The search results will display any date ranges we have access to for that title in our collection. In the example below, it shows that we have the Harvard Business Review from 1922 - Present in Business Source Complete, and that we also have it from 1999 to Present in Print (and that some are missing...).
4. Interlibrary Loan
We are happy to request a copy from another library in these situations. If there is something that you need for your research, and access is down, please feel free to submit an interlibrary loan request. Do try Google Scholar first, though.
