How do I find scholarly or peer-reviewed articles?

You may be interested in searching for scholarly articles or peer-reviewed articles only. Note that not all scholarly articles are peer-reviewed. Peer-reviewed articles are scholarly articles that have been evaluated by a group of experts or specialists to ensure that the information is of a high quality--in other words, they have been reviewed by their peers. You should clarify the type of article you need with your instructor.

Answer

There are two options to try when looking for scholarly or peer reviewed articles:

1. Database filter option: To search for scholarly articles only, you can use the Content Type filter In LibrarySearch, found to the left of the search results page. Select 'Journal Articles' to only view scholarly articles. Other library databases, such as EBSCO and Proquest, often include this filter box on the search results page also. To search for peer-reviewed articles only, you can select the Peer-Reviewed filter box underneath the Refine your Search header also on the left-hand side of your results page.

2. Journal information page: In some cases, you may wish to evaluate the journal article beyond the library's database filter boxes. This is good practice in general, to avoid relying on predatory journals, which may, though infrequently, be found in library databases. Search for the journal title in a search engine to find the journal website which should have information on the journal's reputation and its publication details. Look for sections titles "For Authors," "Author Guidelines," or "Instructions for Authors." These sections typically include any information about the peer review process. Another place to check for peer reviewed journals is the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). This site only includes peer reviewed, open access journals that meet specific crtieria, ensuring their reputation as credible sources.
